    ABOUT THE AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD

    Temperament

    Australian Shepherds are known as an eager to please, alert and loyal breed. They have strong guardian instincts and can be reserved with strangers. Early socialization is important with this breed.

    Health

    The aussie is a relatively healthy breed but breeders should test for hip and elbow dysplasia and perform yearly eye testing by a board certified ophthamologist. There is DNA testing for common issues in the breed as well.
    Two common issues in the breed that cannot be tested for are epilepsy and certain forms of cancer.

    Size

    The Australian Shepherd is a medium sized dog. The preferred height, at the withers, for an adult male is 20 to 23 inches. The preferred height, at the withers, for a female is 18 to 21 inches. Size is never to be sacrificed for quality.

    Trainability

    Aussies are alert, highly intelligent and easy to train but they do need an experienced, dog savvy owner. They are masters of manipulation and will quickly take over a household if given the slightest opportunity.
